Rising Burden of Allergic Conjunctivitis in India: Need for Early Allergy Evaluation and Awareness

Allergic conjunctivitis is emerging as one of the most common yet underdiagnosed allergic disorders in India, especially among children, young adults, and urban populations exposed to increasing pollution, dust, pollen, and indoor allergens. Characterized by persistent itching, redness, watering, burning sensation, and eye irritation, allergic conjunctivitis significantly affects quality of life, school performance, work productivity, and sleep.

According to allergy specialists, many patients continue to suffer for years assuming these symptoms are due to “eye weakness” or recurrent infections, while the underlying cause is often untreated allergy. In several cases, allergic conjunctivitis is associated with allergic rhinitis, asthma, eczema, and environmental sensitization, forming part of the larger “atopic march.”

Dr. Hitesh Billa, popularly known as“Dr Hit Allergy,” emphasized that allergy-related eye disease is increasing rapidly in India due to urbanization, climate changes, poor air quality, and prolonged exposure to indoor allergens such as house dust mites, cockroach allergens, molds, and pet dander. He stated that repeated self-medication with over-the-counter eye drops without identifying the allergic trigger can lead to chronic inflammation and complications.

“Many patients repeatedly use lubricating drops or antibiotic eye medications without realizing that persistent itching is a hallmark of allergy. Early identification of allergens and proper allergy management can dramatically improve symptoms and prevent long-term complications,” said Dr. Hitesh Billa.

Experts also highlight that allergic conjunctivitis should not be treated in isolation. Comprehensive allergy evaluation including detailed history, environmental assessment, and allergy testing can help identify the root cause and guide long-term management strategies. Avoidance measures, allergen-specific counseling, proper eye care, and scientifically guided therapy remain the cornerstone of treatment.

Dr. Hitesh Billa has been actively involved in advancing allergy awareness, evidence-based allergy practice, and airway disease management in India. He recently secured a top rank in the prestigious EAACI-UEMS Examination 2025, one of the internationally recognized certifications in Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He is also recognized for his work in respiratory allergy, severe asthma, eosinophilic airway diseases, bronchoscopy, and allergy education initiatives aimed at improving awareness among both patients and healthcare professionals.

He further stressed the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration between allergists, ophthalmologists, pulmonologists, pediatricians, and ENT specialists to improve early diagnosis and patient outcomes in allergic diseases.

“With increasing environmental exposure and changing lifestyles, India is witnessing a silent allergy epidemic. Public awareness, early diagnosis, and preventive strategies are the need of the hour,” he added.
